Running alongside live jazz while taking in Wakayama Castle, fishing villages, and views across Wakayama Bay makes the Wakayama Jazz Marathon a little different from your average road race. The event brings together running, live music, and some of Wakayama's most scenic locations, with several courses designed to suit different ages and fitness levels.
The half marathon is the standout course, starting in front of Wakayama Castle before winding through the historic castle town and towards the fishing village of Saikazaki. Runners can enjoy views of Wakayama Bay along the way, giving the race more of a sightseeing-run feel than your typical city course.
Music is another major part of the event, with live jazz performances positioned along the courses. The upbeat performances provide entertainment and encouragement for runners, while spectators can join in with the atmosphere from the sidelines. At the finish line at Wakayama Marina City, local gourmet food provides a chance to refuel after the race.
The event also welcomes notable guest runners, including Wakayama-born Hiroki Wakabayashi, known by the nickname "Wakabayashi the God" following his impressive performances in the Hakone Ekiden.
Despite the event's name, there is no official "marathon" length course. Participants can choose from half marathon, 10km, 5km, 3km, and 2km courses, with individual, family, team, and costumed entries available. Registration is limited, so those hoping to participate should check the official event website for the latest entry information.
