Get up Close With Sumo at a New Tokyo Experience

Get a deeper look at Japan's national sport in Shinjuku

Visitors to Tokyo can now get a closer look at Japan’s national sport at Shinjuku Sumo Stable Kabukicho, a new sumo experience facility that opened on October 14.

Sumo tournaments aren't held year-round, so visitors who aren't in Japan during one of the six annual grand tournaments may be wondering how to see the sport in action. This new venue offers an alternative, with a 90-minute experience combining an introduction to sumo's history and traditions with demonstrations, interactive challenges, and opportunities to meet sumo wrestlers. Visitors can also take commemorative photos with the wrestlers, which make for great souvenirs!

The experience is designed with international visitors in mind, with English-speaking staff available to explain the sport and its cultural significance. The venue accommodates up to 110 people per session and holds four performances daily, at 1 pm, 3:30 pm, 6 pm, and 8:30 pm.

Shinjuku Sumo Stable Kabukicho is located in Okubo, Shinjuku, about a two-minute walk from Higashi-Shinjuku Station. The experience is available in both Japanese and English, making it a convenient addition to a Tokyo sightseeing itinerary.
