Yanagawa, a small city in the south of Fukuoka, is known as the Venice of Kyushu and for good reason. The city's 470 kilometers of canals which date back thousands of years mark Yanagawa as a special location and well worth a visit. Canal tours are available year-round but only through a small selection of routes. Shuttle buses drop off passengers from the Nishitetsu Rail Station to the boat loading area with tours lasting about 70 minutes. Commentary is currently only available in Japanese but other non-Japanese speaking visitors can follow the route on the maps provided.
Yanagawa is an especially popular destination for Japanese tourists but is slowly building a reputation with international guests due to its peacefulness and relaxing atmosphere. It's, ostensibly, the ying to Fukuoka's yang and for canal or waterways lovers, Yanagwa is an absolute gem.
