長谷寺の5月は牡丹の季節である。白、桃色、紅色、深紅の花がいっせいに開き、仁王門から続く399段の石段の脇に、500種類、7000株の牡丹が咲き乱れる。一段ごとに踏みしめて、観音霊場の奥深くへと踏み込んでいく。山の上の本堂は、身の丈10mを越える十一面観音の安置されている内々陣、板張りの拝殿、そして遠くの峯を見晴らす舞台からなっている。登廊（のぼりろう）という名の長い外回廊を上りきると、初瀬の山並みと里の景色が目の前に広がった。清浄な空気を胸一杯に吸い込む。そしてもう一度。体の隅々にエネルギーが満ちてくるような気がした。
