Take a look around Miyazaki Prefecture (宮崎県, Miyazaki-ken) and you’ll see why it was a very popular honeymoon destination during the 1960’s (before Okinawa was returned to Japan and international travel became more affordable). Takachiho Gorge and Aoshima Island are both extremely beautiful sights, while the Udo Jingu, dedicated to Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan, is built in a cave on a cliff.

The prefecture’s warm climate, exotic Phoenix palm trees, and delicious mango fruit will give you the illusion of being in a tropical country. And speaking of food, some can’t-miss Miyazaki dishes are chicken nanban and niku-maki onigiri, both of which go very well with shochu sake, which the prefecture is renowned for.

The prefecture is still a great resort spot today, and if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of Japan’s big cities, then Miyazaki is the place to go.
