Gaudi: Windows on the Future 2026

A Tokyo exhibition at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT

Few architects have shaped the visual identity of a city quite like Antoni Gaudí. Best known for transforming Barcelona into a playground of color, texture, and organic form, Gaudí pushed architecture beyond rigid convention. His work blended art, engineering, and nature, resulting in buildings that feel alive. Even today, his designs continue to influence how we think about space, structure, and the small details that bring them together.

In 2026, marking 100 years since his death, a new exhibition in Tokyo is turning the spotlight on one of those details: windows. Titled “Gaudí: Windows that Open the Future,” the event explores how Gaudí approached windows not just as functional elements, but as key parts of a building’s harmony and integration.

Hosted at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Gallery 3, the exhibition is organized by YKK AP and forms part of a wider international project that includes a parallel showcase at Palau Güell, one of Gaudí’s World Heritage-listed works.

Visitors can expect a mix of research, models, and visual materials that unpack the creativity behind Gaudí’s window designs, alongside insights into how those ideas might influence future architecture. The Tokyo exhibition also makes use of the unique spatial design of the venue, offering a slightly different experience from its Barcelona counterpart.
